How to Add Childlike Joy to Your Fitness Routine

Injecting childlike joy into your fitness routine may help you to enjoy it more so that you are more likely to build a new fitness habit. First you should identify those activities that make you happy. What did you enjoy as a child? What part of that activity can you bring to your adult self that recaptures that childlike joy? Forget the rules and imagine, don’t worry about how many calories you are burning…just move.

Here are some ideas to help you to use that joy to encourage your fitness journey:

Embrace Playfulness: Be open to trying new things if you aren’t sure what activities will bring you joy. Turn exercises into challenges. Set up an obstacle course or time yourself to see how quickly you can complete certain exercises.

Dance and Move Freely: Children love to dance and move their bodies without inhibition. Put on some energetic music and let yourself dance freely during your workout. You don’t have to be a great dancer—just let loose and have fun with the music. You can also explore dance bassed workouts like Zumba or hip-hop classes to add more joy to your routine.

Turn Outdoor Activity into an Adventure: Children often have boundless energy and love exploring the outdoors. Take your workouts outside and find ways to incorporate nature into your routine. Connect with your surroundings, appreciate and explore nature.

Use Fun Equipment: Traditional gym equipment can sometimes feel monotonous. Consider using fun and unconventional equipment that can add an element of novelty to your workouts.
For example, try using a hula hoop, jump rope, or a mini trampoline. These items can make your workout feel less like a chore and more like a playful activity.

Get Creative with Exercises: Think outside the box and incorporate exercises that resemble the movements and activities of children. Try skipping, hopping, jumping jacks, or even playing hopscotch. Use your imagination and come up with movements that are enjoyable and remind you of your childhood games.

Play with Friends: Invite your friends or family members to join you in your fitness routine. Schedule group workouts or play team sports. Play games such as H-O-R-S-E, or backyard badminton.

Celebrate: Set small, achievable goals for yourself and celebrate when you reach them. Cheer yourself on, treat yourself to a small reward, like a healthy snack or a fun activity.

Remember, the goal is to approach your fitness routine with a lighthearted and playful attitude. Enjoy the journey of staying active and healthy.
